Subversions

My Subversions series is about memory, exploring the interplay between water and ink. I start with single line contour portraits using water-soluble ink, then add water droplets directly to the paper. I allow the coagulation of water and ink to flow freely down the page, guiding it along its journey by holding the paper like one of those old handheld labyrinths I played with as a kid. The result is something between messy and methodical, an organic sum greater than its parts. Likewise, memory is shaped and guided by the stories we tell, bounded by experience, grounded by connection. Change may pull us from one situation to the next, but our perspectives, relationships, and mistakes leave behind a trail that doesn't just go away when we get there. The past serves as a reminder of where we've been and where we're going. It's all part of the process.
